CUBA

December 28, 2003 - January 4, 2004

Why go to Havana if you can go to Miami instead?  The short answer?  Masochism.  I was very bothered by the juxtaposition of beauty and misery in Cuba and I could not just visit like a good little tourist.   I actually had tears of joy in my eyes when I arrived in NY (after 12 grueling hours with a stop in Toronto).  I've always been very proud to be American, and often am forced to defend my country against the sentiment of anti-Americanism I perceive in my country of residence, France.  But now I feel like yelling from the rooftops of Paris:   THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!   The US may not be perfect, but it's the best thing out there.
